# Select, arrange and group elements

Position objects precisely and keep related elements together.

## Select elements [#select-elements]

Click an element to select it. Ctrl-click on Windows/Linux or Cmd-click on macOS adds or removes an element from the selection. Drag a selection rectangle to include fully contained elements.

Locked elements and groups cannot be selected by ordinary click or selection rectangle. Use their context menu to unlock them.

## Arrange a composition [#arrange-a-composition]

Drag to move, use handles to resize, and use rotation controls to rotate. Bring forward or send backward changes stacking order: it does not change position. Use alignment and distribution controls to organize a row, column or centered composition.

Groups are treated as one visible bounding box for alignment and distribution, preserving the relative positions of their members. When aligning to a reference group, the reference group stays in place.

## Group and ungroup [#group-and-ungroup]

Select related elements and use Group in the right properties sidebar footer, next to Delete. Ungroup makes the members individually available again. Rotating a group or multiselection uses a shared pivot.

Group opacity affects the composed group without overwriting each member's opacity. Opacity applied to ungrouped selected elements changes those elements individually.

Duplicate content when you want an independent copy. Cross-Step copying has additional identity behavior: read [Steps](/en/docs/motion/steps) before building animated transformations.
