# Manage slides, backgrounds and guides

Organize your presentation and build a consistent slide frame.

## Add, duplicate and reorder [#add-duplicate-and-reorder]

Add a slide from the slide controls and choose a starting [layout](/en/docs/design/templates-layouts). Select a slide in the left navigation to edit it. Duplicate one to reuse a composition, or drag its entry to change the order. Delete a slide only when you no longer need its content; check any interactions that target it afterward.

A presentation supports up to **100 slides**. Steps are states inside a slide, not additional slides. Each slide supports Base plus 24 Steps.

## Change the background [#change-the-background]

Select the slide background and open its appearance settings. Choose a solid color or gradient. Gradient controls offer presets, two to eight stops, stop positions and direction/radial choices. Slide backgrounds do not accept transparent gradient stops.

Choose a theme swatch to keep the background linked to the theme, or a custom color to keep it fixed. A Step can have its own background state. See [themes](/en/docs/design/themes) and [Steps](/en/docs/motion/steps).

## Use guides and snapping [#use-guides-and-snapping]

Enable guides while editing to help place content consistently. Adjust divisions and guide opacity. Canvas snapping helps align to the grid; element snapping shows alignment with other content. Square snapping helps keep proportions while resizing.

Guides help author the composition; they are not presentation content. Zoom and scroll belong to the workspace rather than a saved slide layout.

## Check the frame [#check-the-frame]

All slides share the 1920 × 1080, 16:9 canvas. Leave enough margin around text and test at playback size. Off-canvas content is clipped during presentation and export.
