# Add and customize text

Edit text, typography, colors, gradients and alignment on your slides.

## Add and edit a text block [#add-and-edit-a-text-block]

1. Add text from the toolbar and choose its role: H1, H2, H3, Paragraph or Quote.
2. Type directly on the canvas.
3. Select the block and use its properties to change the appearance.
4. Leave the editing field or press Ctrl+Enter to confirm. Escape cancels the active text edit.

Roles give text a consistent starting style from the presentation theme. They are not separate slide layouts.

## Customize the appearance [#customize-the-appearance]

Adjust font family, font size, weight, alignment, color or gradient, and opacity. Move, resize and rotate the text block to fit the composition. Rich-text formatting lets you style content without replacing it with an image.

Choosing a theme palette swatch links the color to that theme slot. Choosing a custom color fixes the color instead. A fixed color does not become linked just because its HEX value matches a theme color.

Changing a role reconnects its typography to the theme. Editing an individual typography property makes that property an override. See [themes](/en/docs/design/themes).

## Keep text useful [#keep-text-useful]

Use a short heading and readable body text. Check your slide at presentation size, not only while zoomed in.

**Convert to Vector** turns text into editable glyph shapes for masks and boolean operations. It is no longer editable as text and is not included in plain-text export. Keep a text copy if you may need to revise the wording. Undo restores the original text.

See [vector composition](/en/docs/design/boolean-masks).
