# Animate elements and slide transitions

Add entrance, exit and ongoing motion without confusing it with Steps.

## Animate an element [#animate-an-element]

Select an element and open its animation controls. Choose the category appropriate to the effect:

| Category | Effects |
| --- | --- |
| Entrance | Fade In, Slide In, Scale In; Typewriter for text |
| Exit | Fade Out, Slide Out, Scale Out |
| Always | Float, Pulse, Rotate |

An element can have one animation per category. Selecting another effect in the same category replaces the existing one. Available effects depend on the element type; Typewriter is not an image animation.

Adjust the available duration, delay and easing controls. Always animations can also expose repetition and interval settings. Preview the timing in Present mode.

## Transition between slides [#transition-between-slides]

Select a slide and configure its transition: None, Fade, Slide or Scale. Adjust duration to control how quickly the next slide arrives.

A slide transition is different from an element's entrance or exit animation, and different from changing a Step inside the same slide.

## Choose Steps for visual transformations [#choose-steps-for-visual-transformations]

Use [Steps](/en/docs/motion/steps) when an object should change position, size or appearance within a slide. Element entrance and exit animations do not run between Steps, so their controls are not offered while authoring a Step.

HTML retains playback; PDF is static. Always inspect the [export format](/en/docs/files/export) before sending your presentation.
